Why are people complaining about hernia mesh, and what is it?

To remove the defective hernia mesh, those who have experienced complications from it generally need many procedures. A hernia mesh is a medical device that replaces loose or damaged tissue after surgery to repair hernias. Both Atriums C-QUR and Ethicon physiomesh hernia mesh implants reportedly caused significant harm in patients undergoing hernia surgery – from pain and infections to adhesions to tissues and bowel obstruction.

There are now approximately 20 hernia mesh physiomesh lawsuits filed in federal courts and 24 C-QUR cases. A Florida lady sustained permanent injuries as a result of having an Ethicon Physiomesh Flexible Composite Mesh put into her body during a hernia repair treatment, claims a Quinn v. Ethicon, Inc. suit was filed in the Middle District of Florida’s U.S. District Court.

According to the lawsuit, physiomesh is a defective product that can eventually embed itself in human tissue and was “not adequately conceived and engineered to be used for hernia repair” creating an unreasonable risk of harm to patients. For example, a Georgia woman suffered seroma (a buildup of fluid inside the body) and neural injury in her abdomen after receiving a defective C-Qur implant, according to Bryant v. Atrium, a lawsuit entered in the Middle District of Georgia’s U.S. District Court. Resulting of the mesh and subsequent removal of the implant, the plaintiff would lose six weeks of work and develop a scar tissue buildup in her abdomen.

The suit alleges that the C-QUR mesh Omega 3 gel coating, made of fish oil, is the main flaw in the design of the implants, as it causes the implant to bend and warp over time, leading to severe inflammation and injuries.

Additionally, patients injured by defective hernia mesh typically need repeated surgeries to remove the device. In 2013, FDA issued a class II recall on one of Atriums C-QUR hernia mesh products, finding the product fish-oil coating can flake and adhere to the interior of its packaging when exposed to excess moisture. The same fish oil coating is allegedly responsible for the mesh’s curling and warping inside the body.

In addition, Ethicon voluntarily recalled some models of Physiomesh in 2016, according to the medical devices trade journal MassDevice, after studies showed a higher incidence of hernia recurrence among patients with that specific type of mesh implant.
