Philips CPAP Recall

Philips has recalled millions of CPAPs and other sleep apnea machines because many users breathe in toxic foam caused by severe problems in their machines. Living in that toxic foam could lead to cancer and severe health problems. The foam goes straight into hoses users are used to breathing correctly when sleeping. In addition to cancer, which is serious and unacceptable, many users have reported headaches, irritation of upper airways, coughing, chest tension, sinus problems, asthma, liver and kidney deterioration, nausea, vomiting, and increased respiratory problems.

A class-action lawsuit was brought against Philips in Massachusetts in June 2021. The suit claims Phillips knew of toxic foam and the severe health problems it caused for years. It claims users had complained about the issue for years, yet Phillips released a public notice in April 2021. It was two more months, to June 14, 2021, before Philips formally recalled the devices.

CPAP Machine Recall

Interestingly, Philips just announced their machines were being recalled just about when they came out with the new devices. Many patients in desperate need of these devices had no option but to buy a unique machine, meaning Philips continued to make profits even after the recall of their current machines was made public. One of the reasons people file lawsuits against Philips is simply because the devices they sold patients were faulty and unsafe. The foam they used in the machines was so dangerous that it eroded and caused cancer.

That alone could be enough issue to warrant lawsuits. Philips is not only using shockingly dangerous materials in its medical devices but also failing to alert the public once it learns about the risks. There are allegations that users complained for years about health problems from the foam. At least Philips learned about the issue in April 2021 but released the recall in mid-June 2021. That means that people continued to purchase and use the machines for at least two months, even though Philips was fully aware of the risks.

Sleep Apnea is a severe sleep disorder in which the breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. It happens when your throat muscles relax, making it the most prevalent type of sleep apnea.

When this happens, you cannot take in adequate air, reducing oxygen levels in the blood. This kind of sleep apnea occurs when your brain is not sending proper signals to your muscles controlling breathing. As a result, you might wake up short of breath or struggle to fall asleep or stay asleep.

This is also called Treatment-Emergent Central Sleep Apnea. It occurs when you have both obstructive and central sleep apnea. A continuous positive airway pressure machine (CPAP) is the most frequently prescribed treatment method for sleep apnea.

This medical gadget keeps your airways open as you sleep and continuously delivers oxygen through your lips and nose, enabling you to breathe more normally. Pressurized air is constantly pumped through an air filter and into a flexible tube by motors in CPAP machines. The line delivers purified air to a mask you close over your nose or mouth as you sleep.

Philips eventually had to recall millions of breathing machines due to the foam problem. But, in addition to recalled sleep apnea machines, it also identified other vital mechanical ventilators for saving lives.

Philips CPAP Injuries

The toxic foam that caused severe health problems for people was polyurethane, which is made from polyester. As people used the machines, the foam began degrading into extremely tiny particles, which users were breathing or swallowing. The foam also produced toxic gases, causing cancer, lung irritation, and organ damage. These harmful machines were sold to patients in 2009. Unfortunately, many users of the devices were exposed to the foam and gases for over a decade.

If you are using one of the Philips Sleep Apnea machines they have recently recalled, you could have grounds for legal action. It would be best to track when you use your machines and how long you have been using your devices. Also, note down what type of machine you used. Also, were you diagnosed with cancer or any other health conditions you and your physician think may have been related to your device?
